Meet Katelyn
“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” - Mark Twain
Hi, I’m Katelyn - a seasoned birth professional, psychiatric licensed vocational nurse (LVN), soon-to-be registered nursing student, and mom based in San Jose, CA.
My background
For years, I was a birth and postpartum doula, childbirth educator, and placenta specialist. Then, in the summer of 2020, I had my own daughter and my whole world turned upside down (in the best way possible)! Now, I'm embarking on a different journey as a labor and delivery nursing student. Even in shifting careers, I see the value that my knowledge in this field brings to clients and so I happily offer birth preparation sessions for anyone who needs them. Most of my clients are first time parents, but I also welcome parents who have done this before and might just want a refresher. The best part about my sessions are they are completely tailored to your wants and needs for your current pregnancy. I welcome any and all questions and love when clients want to educate themselves on the birth process. At the end of the day, you can't plan your birth! But you can prepare for what's to come while simultaneously welcoming the unknown with the right mindset. This is what I teach my clients and is also my own personal philosophy towards birth.
My approach to birth and postpartum
I consider myself a modern birth professional. That means you won’t get a “hippy dippy” vibe from me. But you will get someone who’s seen well over 100 births and been through the birthing process myself. Regardless if you're planning to use pain medications or want a med-free birth, you will feel supported and educated throughout our time working together.
I believe that birthing people have the right to know their options when it comes to pregnancy, labor, childbirth, and postpartum, and I fully support how my clients choose to birth and raise their babies.
While I believe in the physiological process of birth, I also recognize that sometimes pregnant bodies need a little help in birthing their babies and so I am very pro-hospital birth if that's where you feel safest. I honor that no two processes look the same and that sometimes birth won't look like what you expected. So whether you plan on birthing in the hospital or at home, I will help you prepare for what's to come.
Street Cred
Before having my own daughter in 2020, I was a DONA-trained birth doula and ProDoula certified postpartum doula where I practiced for nearly 5 years, supported well over 100 births and dozens of families postpartum. Currently, I am a licensed vocational nurse (LVN) working in psychiatry and will start my Bachelor's of Nursing journey to become a labor and delivery nurse in early 2024.
