I’ve long been a believer of chiropractic care. When I was little, my mom worked for a local chiropractor and that lifestyle coincided nicely with ours. My mom was always a fan of all-natural, more holistic wellness. Especially when it came to medicine and food. So the chiropractor was always an option for our family.
My first trip to the chiropractor actually came after I hurt my back when I was 10 or 11. I had the brilliant idea of riding my bike with my roller blades on…now, why my parents let me do something so stupid is beyond me. But I (shocker) ended up falling as I was trying to dismount my bike and landed on my lower back right on the sliding glass door track. So, anyway, that started my chiropractic journey.
I didn’t get serious about going, however, until about 5 years ago. I had recently moved to San Francisco, had a “big girl” job with awesome insurance and decided that it was time I took care of my nervous system. After all, it controls everything in your body. That coupled with some recent chronic neck pain and frequent lower back spasms due to the bike/roller blade injury. Now, about 5 years later, my neck pain is gone and my lower back pain is all but gone. I go every other week for a quick adjustment and some stimulation on my lower back and it’s wonderful.
This leads me to my next point – the importance of chiropractic care during pregnancy. Pregnancy can bring on some, err, crazy side effects. Morning sickness, nausea, joint pain, hormone changes, sciatica, etc. And, again, since the nervous system controls everything in the body, adjustments during pregnancy can help alleviate some of these…symptoms. How? If your body has a vertebrae that needs some love, it will interfere with the body’s ability to communicate properly. Thus, making your pregnancy symptoms worse.
Most, if not all, chiropractors are trained in how to adjust pregnant women in all stages of their pregnancy. So it’s definitely something to consider if you’re pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
Even for those of us who visit the chiropractor regularly, this can help strengthen the muscles needed to keep your back in tip top shape.
